James Monroe Porrett, 86, of Columbus, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, March 8, 2025. He was born on June 27, 1938 in Memphis Tennessee, to the late Vallie and Lester Porrett.
Jim was a long time resident of Richmond, Michigan and a 1957 graduate of Richmond High School. He married his high school sweetheart, Margaret, on July 31, 1958, at Immaculate Conception Church, in New Baltimore, Michigan.
Jim served in the United States Army, stationed in Germany. After returning home, he purchased a Sunoco gas station & worked as a mechanic. In his spare time filled in as a school bus driver for Richmond while he built his family's home at the young age of 24. Worked for UPS, OGDEN & MOFFETT driving semi trucks, later worked as an excavator working every type of heavy equipment.
He is survived by his three daughters, Kathy (Dave) Moran, Lori (Nicholas) Mayer, Lisa (Brian) Merriman; seven grandchildren, Jessica Garrison, Mathew Garrison, Nicholas Mayer, David (Amy) Moran, Nicole Moran Tige, Hannah Merriman, and Grace Merriman, and seven great-grandchildren; brother, Terry (Linda) Porrett; sisters-in-law, Theresa (Norm) Rabine and Marie (Harry) Belbeck as well as many nieces and nephews.
He is proceeded in death by his wife, Margaret; parents, Lester and Vallie Porrett; and grandson, Nicholas Mayer.
The family honors the memory of James and invites you to visit and share memories Saturday, March 15, 2025, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Kaatz Funeral Directors, Richmond. Funeral services will follow at 4:30 p.m. Fr. John Lancaster will officiate.
Memorials are suggested to Mass at St. Augustine Catholic Church or Parkinson's Foundation.
