James Herbert (Jim) Powell was born in a homestead farmhouse in San Augustine County near Brookeland, TX, December 31, 1930. He passed away on March 17, 2026 at his home in Carthage, TX at the age of 95.
“Herbert”, as he was called by family, graduated from Brookeland High School in 1949 where he participated in basketball and track. James (as he was called in college) graduated from Stephen F. Austin University in 1954 and immediately went into the U.S. Army for two years of service. In 1956 Jim, (to work acquaintances and friends) went to work for Texaco, Inc. and worked there 37 years until he retired in 1993.
Jim met his wife Annette Shepherd Powell in Port Arthur, TX. They married in 1967 in Carthage, TX, and they celebrated 58 years of marriage.
Jim was a true sportsman. He loved to hunt and started hunting at age 9. Jim enjoyed fishing and water sports with his family for decades, primarily at Sam Rayburn Reservoir. Jim deer hunted until after his 90th birthday.
Jim and his wife Annette moved from Nederland to Carthage, TX in 2002, where he continued his love of the outdoors. Jim discovered the joys of gardening for the first time and continued growing vegetables and fruit until age 95. Jim enjoyed doing yard work and reluctantly gave up all but the mowing after he was 93.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents Brink and Leona Powell; sisters, Ola Lee, Iva Franks, Ruth Garlington, and Doris Barlow; and brothers, Elmer Powell, Alfred Powell, Bill Powell, and Hollis Powell. Jim is survived by his wife, Annette Shepherd Powell; sons, John David Powell (Austin TX) and Steven Ray Powell (South Lake Tahoe, CA); brothers, Glen Powell and Ginger, and Charles Wayne Powell and wife Lori (Houston, TX); and sister-in-law, Georgia Shepherd, as well as numerous and much-loved nieces, nephews and friends.
Jim was a member of Rehobeth Methodist Church in Carthage.
A visitation will be held at 11:00 AM prior to the funeral service at Noon at Rehobeth Methodist Church. He will be laid to rest at Rehobeth Cemetery. Reverend David Kennedy will officiate the service assisted by Manuel Rodriguez, III.
