James "Nelson" Riffle

James "Nelson" Riffle, 85, of Walkersville passed away on Sunday, March 29th, 2026 in United Hospital Center of Bridgeport, WV. He was born in Braxton County, WV on November 5th, 1940: son of the late James Gaylord Riffle and Lola Juanita (Williams) Riffle. On November 22nd, 1975, he married Joan L. (Simpson) Riffle, who preceded him in death on April 25th, 2025.

Cherishing Nelson's memory are his two sons: Adam Riffle and wife Amanda of Berlin community and Timothy Riffle of Walkersville and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife Joan, Nelson was preceded in death by two sisters: Janice Garton and Orvilla Smith and one brother: Francis Gene Riffle.

Mr. Riffle retired from maintenance at Mon General Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital of Weston where he took pride in his work and always had a smile. He was a graduate of Walkersville High School with the class of 1958. Nelson was a proud veteran serving as a First Sergeant in the United States Army's 543rd Engineering Company where he served tours in Germany and Vietnam. Younger in life, he loved hunting, fishing and the outdoors in general. Nelson was a simple man and found simple pleasure in sitting on his porch and watching the wildlife as they came and went around his home.

Family and friends will gather at Hardman Family Funeral Home 730 N. Main Avenue Weston on Wednesday, April 1st, 2026 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with Reverend Russell Furr officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens of Jane Lew, WV. Full military honors will be provide by the US Army and Lewis County Honor Guard.
