James Robbins Obituary

James Lee Robbins, Sr., 91, affectionately called Jim, transitioned to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 1, 2018 after a lengthy illness. He was the son of Mary Roberson and Solomon Robins of Mobile, Alabama.  After finishing schooling Jim enlisted in the U.S. Army. After serving the military Jim went to Chicago where he went to school for tailoring, and he learned to make his own clothes. Jim then became a Merchant Marine for a few years. He moved to Boston, Massachusetts where he married and had 2 sons, Stephen, and James Jr. (preceded in death).  After Boston, Jim moved to the Washington D,C. Metropolitan Area where he was a very successful salesperson for the Jack Daniels Company. In 1972, he met the love of his life, Carlene. They were married for 38 wonderful years. After a rewarding career he went to be an HR payroll administrator for the D.C. Department of Corrections, Lorton, VA. He retired in 1980. Upon retiring Jim was a chauffeur for several companies, eventually starting his own business. He joined Third Baptist Church and was baptized by Rev. Dr. Daniel L. Brown, his brother-in-law. He served as a Trustee, Transportation Officer, Men's Chorus, and an Usher. In 1991, Jim became a charter member for First Agape Baptist Community of Faith. He was Trustee Emeritus, Transportation Officer, FMO Member, and a Missionary Life Member. Jim was a truly dedicated and active member in all areas of the church. Jim is preceded in death by his father, mother, and son. He leaves to cherish his memories his wife Carlene of 38 years, son Stephen (Boston, MA), stepdaughters Debra Cook (Falls Church, VA), Carlene (Warren) Jackson (Wilmington, NC); grandchildren Elaine (Preston) Smith (Capitol Heights, MD), Joshua Cook (Jacksonville, FL),  Rachel (Justin) Bradford (Leland, NC), Ingrid Jackson (Greensboro, NC);cousins Ann Williams, Gloria Walker, and Wylie Walker Jr. (Mobile, AL), Tara Williams (Houston, TX); brother and sister-in-law, Daniel and Renelda Brown; nieces Brentina Taylor (Woodbridge, VA), Rev. Desiree (Gerald)McCray (Alexandria, VA); godson Jarred (Natalie) Taylor (Clinton, MD), goddaughters Whitney (Anthony) Pringle (Woodbridge, VA), and Brooke Taylor (Richmond, VA); close friends James Lewis (San Francisco, CA),  Robert Steele (Alexandria, VA); and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. Even though Jim will be deeply missed, his hearty laugh, grand stature, and wit will be remembered forever.
