Reflections of Life

James Edward Roland Sr. We are gathered here today to celebrate the remarkable life of James Edward Roland, known to many as Mr. James, Mr. Roland, Papa, or Pop-a-low. Born on July 20, 1936, in Red Rock, TX. James was a man of ambitious dreams, generous spirit, adventurous heart, and thoughtful demeanor.

James and two cousins joined the United States Marines on December 8, 1956, stationed in San Diego, California. As faith would have it he only served for one month and was honorably discharged on January 8, 1957.

James was a man of many hats - a proud member of the Rifle Association, an ardent hunter, fisher, and an insatiable reader. His love for books was so profound that it fueled his lifetime dream and goal to build a memorial library and museum in St John Colony, in honor of his beloved grandmother Jane Roland. His zest for life took him to various places, with over sixty years spent in the captivating landscape of Anchorage, Alaska. Yet his heart was always rooted in St John Colony. He passed away peacefully in Pflugerville, Texas, where he resided until his departure on August 13, 2025.

James embodied the teachings of Christ, living his life with purpose and serving others selflessly. He was grounded and rooted in his faith, living out the verse from Colossians 2:7, "Let your roots grow down into Him, and let your lives be built on Him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness."

James is preceded in death by both parents, Henry Clay Roland, and Dorothy M. Roland; three siblings Arvor Louis Roland, Eugene Roland and Shirley Fay Roland Hemphill; son, Isaac Jermaine Roland; and daughter April Michelle Roland.

James leaves behind a son, James Edward (Jaime) Roland Jr., Monroe, Louisiana; sisters Mae Terry (Harvey) Adams, Dale, Texas; Betty (Ernest) Bland, Compton, California; brothers Freddie L. (Caroll) Roland Austin, Texas and Eddie L. (Stella) Roland Pflugerville, Texas; 11 grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends with memories to cherish.
