James Rothschild Obituary

Published by Legacy on Jan. 7, 2024.
James Allan Rothschild, winner of the 1959 Bible Contest at Baltimore Hebrew, passed away from complications with Parkinson's Disease. He was 76.
A Baltimorean through and through, Jim graduated from Woodlawn High School and Maryland Law School with a degree in History from Dickinson College in between. He rooted hard for the Orioles and Ravens and Maryland College Basketball, as well as Michigan Football and Virginia Lacrosse to support his kids. In his youth, Jim camped out for Baltimore Colts season tickets as a teenager in the 1960s, remarking for years post 1984 how he still couldn't believe the team left.
An attorney for Anderson Coe and King since 1986, Jim started his career at the US DOJ in D.C. before starting a Baltimore practice with Maffit and Rothschild in 1981. Jim also served in the Maryland National Guard.
Generous with his time, Jim was president of the Baltimore non-profit Central Scholarship Bureau (CSB), The Jewish Museum, The American Jewish Committee and The Green Valley Swim Club and was a Board Member of the Associated Jewish Charities.
A track athlete in high school, Jim enjoyed tennis, golf, and coaching his kids for little league baseball, basketball and soccer. He also participated in the Big Brother program after his kids left for college.
Jim loved to travel and when they became empty nesters wife Audrey and he travelled as much as they could throughout Europe. He favorite trip was what he named "in the Footsteps of Van Gogh" (his favorite artist) where they started in Amsterdam, the birthplace of Van Gogh, then went on to Paris to see his paintings and then went on to Provence where they saw the scenes he painted and the room he lived in Arles.
Quick witted... Jim could think fast on his feet, had a voracious thirst for knowledge of history, and was a big reader of nonfiction. Jim loved the TV shows on How Things Work even though famous past foes included a ping pong table and barbeque grill.
Lastly Jim was an outstanding photographer, most prominently with a photograph of Cal Ripken's home run in game 2131 from September 6, 1995 having been accepted for display at the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife Audrey, their sons Evan and Josh, their daughters-in-law Allyson and Kelsey and his precocious granddaughter Sage as well as four siblings (and spouses) Steve (Marilyn), Bruce (Ellen), Karen (Sid) and Frank, sisters-in laws Ilene (David) and Ellen, cousins Tanya, Mark, Lisa, Joanie, Ronnie, Bobby, Barbara (David), Allison (Richard), Cherie, Josie and (Bill), nieces and nephews Emily (Chris), Laura (Ben), Sarah (Jared), Jeffrey (Katie), Julie (Erez), Cindy (Tony), Zack (Ferka), Jonathan (Robin), Daniel (Megan), Jamie and Maddy and great nieces and nephews Charlie, Robbie, Rafi, Joey, Benji, JoAnna, Jack, Erita, Ben, Jadyn, Neve, Matan, Adiel, Galia, Elezar, Yona, Hailey, Reagan and Blake. He was predeceased by his parents, Ruth and Walter Rothschild.
