James M. "Jim" Scanlon, age 66, of North Creek Road, passed away peacefully early Tuesday morning, Dec. 19, 2023 in the comfort of his home.  He had the support of his family at his side, when his passing occurred.   Jim was born in Little Falls on Nov. 18, 1957, son of the late Kenneth William and Zita Arleen (Hudd) Scanlon and educated in local schools.  At the age of 16, he enlisted in the US Navy serving from 1974-1976 and on the U.S.S. Manitowoc as a steamfitter/welder.     Upon being discharged from the Navy, Jim worked for his best friend, mentor, and father figure, Edward Becker at his garage in Little Falls, whom recently passed away.  During Jim’s time working for Eddie, Jim met his loving wife, Pearl “Penny” Salanco and spent some of their best times together, riding his Harley Davidson with friends.  They were united in marriage on Feb. 22, 1985 at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Little Falls.  Jim later went to work for Cherry Burrell as a welder, fabricator, and operated the head spinner.  In 1989, Jim started his own business, Scanlon Service.  He did welding and fabrication, along with mechanical repairs.  Jim was known as one of the best welder in the area, and “if Jim couldn’t fix it, no one could”.   Jim was a selfless man, always willing to lend a hand when needed.  He enjoyed sharing his knowledge and teaching anyone who was interested in learning. He was an honest, hardworking man who was a friend to many and will be dearly missed.    Survivors include his wife, Penny, at home; his children, Benjamin Scanlon of Little Falls and Jared Scanlon (Ashley) and granddaughter Sydney of the Town of Knox; his siblings, Kathleen Canastar and husband Tom of Little Falls, Sharon Scanlon of Little Falls and Terry Scanlon of Little Falls; many nieces, nephews and cousins.  He was preceded in death by his siblings, Patrick Scanlon, Tom Scanlon and Joe Scanlon.   Visitation will take place on Saturday, December 23, 2023 from 1-3 pm at Mohawk Valley Funerals and Cremations, 7507 State Route 5, between Little Falls and St. Johnsville, 315-508-5131.   Military honors will be offered by the US Navy and burial will be private.  Kindly consider memorial offerings in Jim’s name to Hospice Care, Inc.  The staff of Hospice treated Jim and his family with kindness and compassion.
