James Scully Obituary

SIDNEY - James "Mike" Michael Scully, 88, of Sidney, passed away on February 25, 2026, just 17 days after celebrating his 88th birthday. Perpetually young at heart, he was known for his humor, warmth, and unmistakable Irish spark.

Born February 8,1938, in Charleston to Joseph E. Scully and Mary M. (Shobe) Scully, Mike made Sidney his lifelong home. He proudly served in the United States Army at the Presidio of San Francisco and was honorably discharged in 1960 to return home and care for his mother and siblings following his father's passing, a reflection of his lifelong devotion to family.

In 1968, he married the love of his life, Sherry Lynn (Arnold) Scully. Their marriage was marked by loyalty and laughter until her passing in 2016.

A lifelong member of Holy Angels Catholic Church and graduate of Holy Angels High School (Class of 1957), Mike's faith guided him quietly throughout his life. He gave generously of himself, including many years as a blood donor with the American Red Cross.

Mike was a proud Irishman, tracing his heritage to Tipperary, Ireland, and he filled his home with shamrocks, Celtic crosses, and Irish blessings. He was a devoted fan of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, passing that love on to his children and grandchildren. Saturdays in the fall were sacred.

An avid golfer, he began as a caddy at the Sidney Moose Lodge and later became a proud 50-year member. He played at Shelby Oaks and with the "Senior Swingers," valuing not only the game but the friendships it fostered. He also cherished gathering with classmates, family, and friends for breakfast at Perkins Restaurant where the staff knew and loved him well.

Mike never met a stranger. With his gift of gab and welcoming spirit, he turned conversations into friendships. His grandchildren were his pride and joy, and his love for them was evident in all he did.

He faced health challenges in recent years with determination and what he called his "fightin' spirit" and the "luck of the Irish," forming special bonds with his caregivers along the way. His family extends their immense gratitude to each and every nurse, therapist, tech and nursing assistant who cared for Mike with love, compassion and dedication.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Sherry; siblings John Scully, Patricia Bergman, Marie Patterson, and infant brother Thomas.

He is survived by his children Sean Patrick Scully; Shannon Nicole (Pete Wojtkowiak); and Chad Michael (Tracy Scully); his cherished grandchildren Colin (fiancee Lindsey Jones), Logan (Morgan) and Claire; Anya and Evan Wojtkowiak; Mackenzie (Alex Kalix) and Andrew (Elaina); siblings Frances O'Leary (John), Paul "Butch" Scully (Ester Beckstedt); and brother-in-law Hank Patterson.

Mike will be remembered for his laughter, loyalty, faith, and enduring Irish spirit.

Slainte.
