James "Swede" Edwin Severson, 79, of Breckenridge, MN, passed away July 9, 2025, at Fergus Falls (MN) Veterans Home, surrounded by his loved ones. His funeral service was held on Monday, July 14, 2025, at Vertin-Munson Funeral Home in Wahpeton.
James was born May 10, 1946, in Morris, MN, to Edwin and Margaret (Kenkel) Severson. After graduating from Morris High School in 1964, he attended Staples Technical College for heavy equipment operator and maintenance. Upon receiving his diploma, he enlisted in the U.S Navy, where he served two tours in Vietnam as a member of the Seabees, MCB9 Battalion. Following his deployment, he married Lynette McFarren in the fall of 1968. From this union, two children were born Jason and Jennifer. They made their home in Breckenridge, MN. Swede had a 38-year career with the Minnesota Department of Transportation, retiring in 2008. He was also a member of the Breckenridge Fire Department for several years, serving as the fire chief from 1984 to 1988.
Swede enjoyed time on his hunting property near Ottertail City. He enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins and NASCAR, especially the Daytona 500 party he would host each year. He loved having his family around him and welcomed any visitor to his garage.
He is survived by his children, Jason (Amy) Severson, Jennifer Hegge (Andy Sletten); grandchildren, Wyatt Severson, Shane Severson, Savannah Severson, Zach Hegge, Ashton Hegge, and Jace Hegge; son-in-law, Jon Hegge; and special friend Char Speidel.
