Funeral service for Mr. James Allen Sheppard will be conducted at 11 a.m., Thursday, July 20, 2023, at Mother Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, 110 Calhoun Street, Charleston, SC. Interment will follow at 10 a.m., Friday, July 21, 2023, at Florence National Cemetery.
Mr. James Sheppard was born April 10, 1942, the son of the late John Benjamin (Jessie) Sheppard and Emily Victoria Sheppard. He died Wednesday, July 12, 2023, after an illness.
Mr. Sheppard joined Mother Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church at an early age and was baptized. He attended Buist Elementary School and was a graduate of Burke High School's Class of 1960. He served in the United States Air Force and worked with the General Post Office in New York.
Survivors include his wife of the home, Polly Daniels Sheppard; and five sons, Lorenza (Samantha) James, Oscar James, Kelvin (Kim) James, Gilbert (Cheryl) James and Jeffery Sheppard.
Public viewing will be at J.O. & Annette Smith Memorial Chapel, on July 19, 2023, Wednesday 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. and 5 - 7 p.m., at Mother Emmanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church. Mr. Sheppard will lie-in-state one hour prior to his service at the church on Thursday.
