James Robert Shields, 95, died in hospice surrounded by his loving daughters, Elizabeth and Jamie, and their families. Born April 3rd, 1928 in Springfield, Missouri to James Albert Shields and Minnie Elizabeth (Anderson) Shields, Jim was raised in Clay Center, Kansas, and graduated from Clay County Community High School where he ran track and lettered in football, playing guard for the Tigers all four years. He also ran track for Kansas State University where he graduated with a BS in Business. Shortly thereafter, Jim was drafted into the Army and served as a Master Sargent in the Korean War. Following honorable discharge, Jim began his life-long career at Sealright Packaging Company holding positions including Purchasing Manager and Transportation Manager. Sealright is where Jim met Joanne, his wife of 64 years and the love of his life.
Jim always put family first. As a teenager, he was a supportive big brother to his younger brother Don. Upon meeting Joanne, he helped guide his younger brother-in-law Tim as he grew up. Jim was a devoted husband who always supported his wife and loved taking her out to dinner and dancing. As a father and grandfather, Jim modeled honesty, a strong work ethic and always taking pride in a job well done. As a great grandfather, lovingly known as Papu, he enjoyed reading stories, singing songs and playing catch. He always made time to talk over problems with anyone who needed his advice and support. Jim enjoyed gardening, hosting get-togethers and going to the theater with his family.
Jim was an avid Chiefs fan and loved attending any of his daughters' and granddaughter's events. He was active in Silver Blades Figure Skating Club of Kansas City in support of his daughters, serving as president and figure skating judge. Jim and Joanne were active in greyhound rescue, and Jim served on the HOA board at Four Colonies for many years, including as HOA president.
Jim is survived by his daughters Elizabeth Pesek-Shields (Bill) and Jamie Shields-Wolfe (Craig), granddaughter Angela Summers (Joshua), two great-grandchildren, brother Don and brother-in-law Tim.
Jim's Celebration of Life will be held on September 29th at 11:00 a.m. at the Leavenworth National Cemetery located at 150 Muncie Road, Leavenworth, KS 66048.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Association (alz.org).
