James R. Smart, 79, of Vernon, loving husband of 54 years to Jean M. (Derosier) Smart, passed away at his home surrounded by family on Saturday, January 24, 2026. Born on October 15, 1946, in Eagle Lake, ME, Jim was one of four children to the late Camille and Marie Exilia (Soucey) Smart. He grew up in Eagle Lake, ME and was a graduate of Community High School in Fort Kent. Following high school, Jim proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served his country with honor for forty years.
Jim was a devoted and active member of St. Joseph's Church in Rockville, CT. His faith was central to his life. He was a member of the Secular Franciscan Order, The Korban Fraternity Third Order Franciscans, and the Pastoral Council. Over the years, he generously served his parish as a teacher, Director of Religious Education, and Head of the RCIA program, guiding many in their faith journey.
Jim found great joy in life's simple pleasures. He loved watching the Boston Red Sox and the UCONN Women's Basketball, and nothing made him prouder than supporting his granddaughters at their various activities. Jim was an avid reader and loved spending time in his yard.
In addition to his loving wife, Jean, he is survived by his daughter, Kimberly Chenoweth and her husband Michael of Baldwinville, MA; his son, Kevin Smart of Westfield, MA; his two cherished granddaughters, Sydney and Hayley Chenoweth; and his two sisters, Judy Raymond of Fort Kent, ME, and Jean Duggan of Gloucester, VA. He was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Joyce Jandreau; and his brother-in-law, James Duggan.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, January 29, from 5-7 p.m. at the Ladd Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home, 551 Talcottville Rd. (Rt 83) in Vernon. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, January 30, beginning at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, 33 West St., Vernon. Burial will be held privately at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph's Church, 33 West St., Vernon, CT 06066 in Jim's name or to a charity of choice.
