James Smith, an only child born on March 13, 1938, to the late Ora Theresa Lee, was called home by God on June 24, 2025. He lived a rich and fulfilling life, raised in Oakland and San Diego, California. Graveside services will be at 10:30am on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at Green Hills Cemetery.
After graduating from San Diego High School, James enlisted in the Army and was honorably discharged from Fort Benning (now known as Fort Moore) in Georgia, where he served as a Helicopter Mechanic. During his time in service, he participated in the Vietnam Conflict, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross and achieving Marksman proficiency in both Pistol (.45) and Rifle (M-14).
James devoted many years to his career, working at MCAS Miramar Marine Base and Naval Air Station North Island Base, amassing a total of 52 years of service. In his later years, he served as a supervisor in the Fuel Department at Miramar.
He met the love of his life, Gussie Youngblood, and they married, welcoming three children: Alfred, La Pezra (Peggy), and Derek. Their marriage lasted over 50 years, during which James dedicated much of his time and energy to caring for Gussie until her passing.
James will be fondly remembered as a quiet yet spirited individual. For over 50 years, he was a devoted member of the Southeast Church of the Nazarene, actively participating in various ministries and roles while generously supporting the church and numerous charities. He taught Sunday School, served on the church board, and held the position of church treasurer for many years, strongly supporting the church's ministries. One of his cherished traditions included frying turkeys for the church's annual Thanksgiving dinner, a highlight of the holiday festivities! He was also a dedicated supporter of children's and youth ministries, helping serve dinners, attending men's breakfasts, and frequently joining fellow church members at the Southern California Men's retreats.
James was known for offering wise counsel, particularly to the young men in the congregation. The Smith family graciously hosted Bible studies and many gatherings for Southeast Church in their home, always willing to lend a hand to others. Church members and friends treasure the joyful memories shared at the Smith residence, filled with fun, delicious food, and warm fellowship.
A true embodiment of faith, every Sunday, James testified to God's faithfulness, regardless of the challenges he faced. He was a remarkable churchman and a devoted man of God! His absence will be deeply felt, but his legacy will continue to inspire all who were privileged to know him.
As a loving husband, father, son and grandfather, James leaves behind a cherished legacy. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gussie, and is survived by his daughter, La Pezra (Peggy) Smith of Escondido, CA; sons, Alfred Smith and Derek Smith; two granddaughters, Amaya Smith and Tatiana Smith; sister-in-law Pearlie Thomas; along with a host of nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.
