James A. Smith, Sr. known to many as Jim, Smitty, or Duna; devoted father, uncle, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on January 20, 2026.

Born in Eckman, West Virginia, on December 7, 1943, to Fletcher Smith and Rebecca Lucille Smith. James grew up with a strong sense of family, hard work, and pride in where he came from.

A graduate of Elkhorn High School, James carried with him a sharp mind, known for his quick wit and unforgettable storytelling. He never shied away from a little excitement, especially when it came to trying his luck with the lottery or enjoying a day at the casino. In quieter moments, he found comfort in watching golf and dog shows, simple pleasures that brought him joy throughout his life.

James discovered his true calling in the art of car detailing. With dedication, skill, and an unwavering commitment to quality. He founded Smith Reconditioning, a business that became a trusted name in the Columbus, Ohio community. For 42 years, his company proudly held an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau-a reflection not only of his craftsmanship but of his integrity and the respect he earned from customers and colleagues alike.

He is preceded in death by his parents Fletcher and Rebecca; his sisters Arlene Lee and Delores A. Smith; his brothers Elder Gene A. Smith and William Smith; and his beloved daughter Juliet Nicole Smith.

James leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and family devotion. He is survived by his son James (Sophia) A. Smith II, and his treasured grandchildren Quynn Smith, Enonn Smith, James A. Smith III, Jayla Smith, LaVante Brown, Larenz Brown, Jazmyn Brown; along with his three great granddaughters and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
