James Michael Sorensen passed away peacefully at his beloved Paonia home on August 27th, 2025 at the age of 58, of congestive heart failure, James was welcomed into the Sorensen family at ten days old in 1968 when he was adopted by Willa and Russell Sorensen.
He grew up on the family ranch in Paonia, alongside his other brothers, Chris and Clay.
The three shared a lively boyhood, full of mischief, including trapping each other in the hayloft and countless other adventures. His was a creative spirit through and through.
James was endlessly imaginative. He was well known for his ever-growing list where he sketched his designs and dreamed of new projects. His hands were rarely idle. He loved building, remodeling and successfully flipping homes. Through his hard work and natural charm, he built a loyal and distinguished clientele, scanning from Denver and the Western Slope to California.
He spent many years working at Dependable Lumber. He was always ready to help, inspire, crack jokes, sometimes raunchy, always memorable. Above all, James was deeply rooted in community. He didn't just live in Paonia. He knew his neighbors cared for them, embodied the true spirit of being neighborly. Whether lending a hand, sharing a laugh across the fence, or simply being present, James made everyone around him feel seen and valued. James had a gift for turning the ordinary into something special. His sense of style was remarkable, from his sharp wardrobe to his collection of fancy shoes.
He was always an outstanding cook, his legendary stuffed mushrooms became a favorable favorite among family and friends. Those who knew James knew his heart belonged to his home.
He formed lasting friendships wherever he lived or worked. His warmth, generosity and boisterous laugh left an impression that will never be forgotten.
James was preceded in death by his father Russell and his brothers Chris and Clay. He is survived by his mother Willa Sorensen, his stepfather Bud Van Den Berg, and his nieces and nephews, Eliya, Ariana and Kai Sorensen. He also leaves behind a wide circle of friends. Spurning coast to coast, many of whom he considered family. James spread joy wherever he went. Those who loved him will carry his memory forward with laughter, gratitude and love.
