James G. St. Angelo, 97, of Bristol, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at the Rhode Island Veterans Home. He was the husband of the late Muriel P. (Champagne) St. Angelo for 65 years before her passing in 2016.
Born in Newport and a Bristol resident for the over forty years, he was the son of the late Genaro and Josephine (Garvin) St. Angelo.
He was a WWII Navy veteran, who served on the U.S.S. Tarawa (CV-40) in the Pacific Theater. Saint retired in 1981 after 36 years in the U.S. Navy and became the Educational Services Officer at Personnel Support Detachment, Naval Station Newport, serving the Navy for over 10 years as a civilian. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church and a former usher at St. Mary of the Bay Church in Warren.
He was a life member of the Bristol Fourth of July Committee, where he especially loved chairing the annual visiting naval ship softball tournament/picnic, which he did for over 10 years. He was honored in 2008 when the Fourth of July Committee named the annual softball tournament after him. He and his wife were recipients of the Hattie Brown Award for volunteerism in 2006. He was also a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 237, Bristol; a life member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV); a life member of the Fleet Reserve Association; a Red Cross volunteer for 12 years and a Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society volunteer for 9 years at the Navy Thrift Shop, Newport. While on active duty, he volunteered with two bugle and drum corps, as well as the Seaway Royal Guard; was the Chairman of the St. Lawrence Seaway Festival Parade in Ogdensburg, NY. He was an avid sports fanatic, especially for all the New England teams.
He is survived by two daughters Patricia Laskowski, of Charlotte, NC, and her husband, Edward, and Donna St. Angelo, of Bristol; his grandchildren, Melissa (Mike) Coffman, Alicia Laskowski and Kristin (Dylan) Cramer of North Carolina and MAJ James (Annie) Pepoon of Georgia; his great-grandchildren, Michael Coffman, Lillian and Maxwell Cramer of North Carolina and Zoie, Marnie, Tessie and Norrie Pepoon of Georgia; a brother, Wallace St. Angelo of Cranston; a sister, Joan St. Angelo of Somerset and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife Muriel, his parents, and four siblings: Muriel Knight, Dorothy Hogan, Rita Coggeshall and Jere St. Angelo and a great-grandchild, Kaila E. Pepoon.
His family is very grateful to the staff of Delta Cottage at the RI Veterans Home for their excellent care, patience and kindness during his eight years there. Their dedication comforted him, and it comforted us.
Visiting Hours will be held on Thursday, November 7, 2024 at Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood Street, Bristol from 4:00-6:00 PM. His funeral service will be private. In Lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his memory may be made to the Garden Foundation of RI (www.gardenfoundationofri.org), PO Box 1515, Kingston, RI 02881 (please note for RI Veterans Greenhouse) or Bird Haven Ranch, 160 Bristol Ferry Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.
