James B. Stewart III., 85, of Dinwiddie, Virginia, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, September 4, 2025. He was born on August 3, 1940, to the late James Benjamin Stewart, Jr and Mildred Frances Stewart.

James proudly served in the Army Reserves for seven years and always took the time to acknowledge veterans for their service to our country. He worked for many years as a machine operator at Dupont Fibers. He also gave his time to the Ettrick Volunteer Fire Department and Ettrick- Matoaca Volunteer Rescue Squad.

James was a devoted father to his daughter, Melanie, whom he shared with former spouse Brenda Stewart. He was a constant presence in his daughter’s life—from sneaking treats before or after activities to cheering her on at softball games and driving carloads of laughing girls around town. As Melanie started a family of her own in Massachusetts, they remained close, keeping in touch with daily chats. He cherished his role as a grandfather to Morgan and Harper.

James deeply valued his family. He lovingly cared for his mother, Mildred, in her later years, during which time he met his devoted companion of over a decade, Barbara Davis. He cherished his relationship with his sister, Linda Hogwood, and enjoyed time spent with his brother- and sister-in-law, David and Judy Gill.

James had a love of the outdoors and wildlife, including deep sea fishing in the Outer Banks and on the Eastern Shore with his friends and family. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed cheering on the Boston Red Sox, especially when they played Barbara’s beloved New York Yankees. James had a passion for music and dancing. He and Barbara served as active members of the Dinwiddie Diamonds and could be found working the door and shimmying away on the dance floor at their Friday Night dances.

James is survived by his daughter Melanie Reynolds and her husband Brian; grandchildren Morgan and Harper; his sister Linda Hogwood and her family; and his significant other Barbara Davis and her family.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834, with Pastor Jim Burton officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Condolences may be registered at www.ealvinsmall.com
