James Sundquist Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Nash Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc. - Crystal Falls on Mar. 2, 2026.
James A. Sundquist, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, peacefully departed this world on February 20, 2026, at the age of 83. Born on March 27, 1942, in Hancock, Michigan, James lived a life filled with love, service, and devotion to his faith and family.

The son of Oscar and Marion Sundquist, Jim grew up in a close-knit family in Michigan. He was preceded in death by his parents and his dear brothers, Richard, William, and Robert Sundquist. Jim carried forward his family's legacy with warmth and integrity, traits that were evident to all who knew him.

In 1960, Jim graduated from Forest Park High School, and soon thereafter, he honorably served his country in the United States Army. His dedication to public service continued as he pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Northern Michigan University.

Fate brought Jim and Bonnie L. Erickson together, and the two were married on December 26, 1969, in St. Ignace, Michigan. Despite a brief courtship of just three weeks, their strong bond and mutual love saw them through 56 wonderful years of marriage. Together, they raised a son, James, who, along with his wife Holly, blessed Jim with three cherished grandsons: Jake, Max, and Peter Thelander.

Jim's professional journey led him to Petersburg, Alaska, where he served as the Director of Social Services. The call of home eventually led him back to Michigan, where he dedicated his career to the Department of Human Services until his retirement. Post-retirement, Jim found joy in farming with his son and spending time hunting with family and friends. These activities reflected his deep appreciation for nature and the simple pleasures of life.

A man of profound faith, Jim was a devout Christian whose life was a testament to his belief in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. His dedication to his faith was unwavering, and he spent countless hours in prayer and study of the Bible. His kindness, support, and generosity left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Bonnie, his son James and daughter-in-law Holly, his grandsons Jake, Max, Peter, and great grandson Peter. His brother John and sister-in-law Pat, as well as a niece and three nephews, also survive him, along with many friends and extended family members who will miss him dearly.

In honor of Jim's love for animals, the family requests that donations be made to the Northwoods Animal Shelter in Iron River, MI, in lieu of flowers. A private funeral ceremony will be held to celebrate Jim's life, in accordance with his wishes.

James A. Sundquist's life was a beacon of love and faith. His legacy of kindness and service will continue to inspire those who knew him. Though he has left this earthly realm, his spirit will forever remain in the hearts of his family and friends.
