James Surrett Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery Funeral Home on Mar. 20, 2026.
James B. "J.B." Surrett, 81, of Cedar Rapids, passed away on Wednesday, March 18, 2026. A private graveside service will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.

J.B. was born on New Years Eve, 1944, to William and Essie Mae Surrett. He was born and raised in South Carolina, and after spending some of his adult life there, moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1965. He joined the Ironworkers Local 89 in 1967 and proudly worked with them for over 55 years.

In Cedar Rapids J.B. met Linda Lee McDonald. The two married in 1968 and raised their family together, staying in Cedar Rapids.

After retirement in 2006, J.B. enjoyed time with his family, his dogs, and the great outdoors. He could often be found relaxing in the garage, cruising down the street or along the Cedar River at Ellis Park. He loved telling stories about his ironworking days and his friends from the Local 89.

J.B is preceded in death by his parents, William and Essie Mae Surrett.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Linda Surrett; his children, James Surrett, Robert Surrett, Stacy (John) Lynch, and Tammy Baldwin; and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to a local animal shelter of your choice.
