James Garland Sutherland, 83, passed away on July 6, 2025, at his residence. He was the husband of Jerry Janice Sutherland. They shared fifty-three years of marriage together.
Born in Kingsport, TN on December 3, 1941. James was the son of James
C. Sutherland and Grace Getrude Greer. He had to quit school after the 9th grade to support his elderly father.
At the age of eighteen, James enlisted in the United States Navy. He went to boot camp in San Diego, CA and on to radar school in San Francisco. James was then called to go to Vietnam in 1962 when early police action began. He spent three years in the Pacific region-Hawaii, Vietnam. Japan, etc. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy in December of 1962.
After leaving the service, James went on to work as an automobile mechanic and radio technician. He owned an 18-wheeler between March 1980 and September 1983 hauling sand and gravel. He also hauled oilfield pipe to drilling sites across the country.
He enjoyed gardening and reading. He often visited the Henry Rosenberg Library in Galveston. His favorite authors were Larry McMurtry and John Grisham. James liked country music pioneer singers/songwriters Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson. He also liked the Rock and Roll sounds of singer, songwriter, musician Bob Seger and American musicians Buddy Holly and musician/guitarist, Chuck Berry.
James is preceded in death by his parents, James C. Sutherland and Grace Getrude Greer, a brother, and several half-brothers and sisters.
James is survived by wife, Jerry J. Sutherland; children, Sean E. Sutherland and wife Angela Sharp and Darren S. Sutherland and wife Jimmie Sutherland; granddaughters, Sydney A. Sutherland (age 12), Brooklyn Sutherland (age 10), and grandson, Deacon J. Sutherland (age 10).
Graveside Service will be held on Tuesday, July 15th at 10:45 am at the Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Dr., Houston. TX 77038. Please line up your vehicle behind the Carnes Funeral hearse in Lane 2 by 10:20 am.
Special Thanks and or Memorial donations may be made to the Rosenberg Library in Galveston or a library/charity of your choice in lieu of flowers.
