James Tate was born on March 21, 1947, in Macon, Mississippi, and had been residing in Erie, Pennsylvania, for more than 74 years. He passed away on September 14, 2025. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roberta (Robinson) Tate and Esset Tate, Sr., as well as his sister, Annette Tate. James was the oldest of ten siblings.

He openly confessed his faith in the Lord and accepted Jesus Christ a s his personal Savior, joining Morning Star Baptist Church. James attended Academy High School, where he earned academic honors, and later received his GED.

Subsequently, he pursued higher education and earned an associate's degree in Computer Science. He was previously employed at Leo's Car Wash, General Electric, and Burcyrus Erie until he became disabled.

Oh, those Cleveland Browns had a lifelong fan in James. He would shut down all activities for the day when the Browns had a game to play. James enjoyed playing the PA Lottery and sometimes having the winning number. His favorite radio station was Super Soul Saturday. Of course, he had a sidebar seat for current and historical politics to give his opinion.

James was a loving and devoted son and a brother to all of his siblings: Willie (Rhea) Tate, Leroy Tate, Esset Tate, Jr., sisters Retha Tate, Barbara (Sherman) Roberts, Shirley (Jimmy Keys) McCray, Charlene Tate, Sharann Tate, Doris Hinton, and Loris Boatman. As the eldest sibling, he often provided guidance and support while also being open to seeking advice from them in return. His love for his nieces and nephews was unwavering; they frequently visited him and enjoyed his stories and the wisdom he shared from his life experiences. He was a nephew to a host of aunts, uncles, and cousins.

James took great pride in his role as the Grill Master during family gatherings and had an excellent taste for good soul food. His passion for God was so great that it exceeded the love and generosity he could give to others.

We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Cleveland Clinic, Oncology Department, and UPMC, particularly to Dr. Hussain and his dedicated staff. Our sincere appreciation also goes to the AHN Urology Department, with special thanks to Dr. Mendiola and his team for their exceptional care. A special acknowledgment is given to Jimmy (Bimp) Keys for his assistance in the care of James. Special thank you to the Hospice team that cared for James as well.

The Services are entrusted to House of Paradise Cremation & Funeral Services Inc.
