James Thomas Obituary
CASTLETON - James D. Thomas, 79, of Castleton, passed away Sunday, October 12, 2025, at Riverside Nursing and Rehabilitation.
James was born in Albany, N.Y., the son of the late Franklin D. Thomas and Jane (Brown) Thomas.
He proudly served in the United states marines during the Vietnam Era, of which he served two tours.
James's interests were Running and teaching others how to successfully complete marathon, going out with his sons for Monday night football, and was a member of The VFW, Elks, and various runners associations.
He retired from a Govt Affairs for Verizon telephone after 30 years. He also worked as a personal accountant for many years.
Survivors include sons, Matthew D. (Jamie) Thomas and Michael J. Thomas; sister, Beth DiBiasio. He was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Mariah G. Thomas, in 2022.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his calling hours, Thursday, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 12 p.m., in the Wm. J. Rockefeller Funeral Home, 165 Columbia Tpk., Rensselaer. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery Castleton, N.Y.
Contributions in James's memory may be made to Danna Farber Cancer Institute.

I'm saddened to hear of Jim's passing. I had the privilege of spending many miles with Jim when he coached runners for the Mohawk Hudson River Marathon. Jim had a rare gift for bringing out the best in people: his dedication, humor, and genuine care inspired so many to reach goals they might never have thought possible. His impact will ripple throughout the running community for years to come.
