James Clifton Thornton

James Clifton Thornton passed away peacefully on December 23, 2025, at the age of 89 after a long and fulfilling life. He was born on June 12, 1936, in New Albany, MS to the late Carl and Buelah Thornton. James was the loving husband of the late Bernice McDonald Thornton, with whom he had shared 69 wonderful years of marriage prior to her passing on July 16, 2025.

In addition to his wife and parents, James was preceded in death by his sister, Janie Mae Hill, his daughter, Angela Kathryn Luttrell, and his son, Jimmy Ray Thornton

James is survived by his grandchildren Wes (Kristina) Luttrell of Hernando, MS, Shannon (Bradley) Morman of Quitman, AR, Cory (Crystal) Thornton of Santa Rosa Beach, FL and seven great grandchildren. Also Survived by his brother, Carl R. Thornton, Jr. of Eads, TN.

In earlier years, James found great enjoyment in camping and boating with friends and family. He was a talented woodworker and enjoyed hand building doll houses, antique wooden toys, and Christmas décor items.

Until the time of his retirement, James worked as a brick mason and a reputable home builder. He was a skilled tradesman and took immense pride in his craft. As a hands-on builder he was known for his integrity, skill, and commitment to excellence.

He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Visitation will be held Friday, January 2, 2026, at Goodman Oaks Church of Christ, 1700 Goodman Rd E. in Southaven, MS at 12pm with the memorial service to follow at 1pm. Burial will be at Forest Hill South Cemetery in Memphis, TN.
