James "Jim" Ursta, age 84, of Chesterton, Indiana, passed away on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, in Valparaiso, Indiana. He was born on December 19, 1939, in Gary, Indiana, to John and Mary (Lengyel) Ursta. Jim married Janice "Jan" Glancy on April 16, 1966.
Jim is survived by his daughters, Cindi (Wayne) Ward of Valparaiso, IN, Kim (Brian) Sherwin of Valparaiso, IN, Jaime (Trevor) Beaver of Knoxville, TN; granddaughters, Macy (Derek) Erny of Chesterton, IN, Landry Beaver of Knoxville, TN; grandsons, Andrew Delich of Burns Harbor, IN, Clifton Sherwin of Valparaiso, IN; great-granddaughters, Avery Erny, Elsie Erny and Clara Erny; sister, Cynthia (Roger) Ershick of Portage, IN; nephew, Scott Ershick of Portage, IN. He was preceded in death by his father, John Ursta; mother, Mary Ursta; wife, Janice Ursta; brothers, John (Joanna) Ursta, Daniel Ursta, and niece, Kathy Ershick.
Jim was a graduate of Lew Wallace High School class of 1957. He was a veteran of the United States Army, where he helped train the 2nd division artillery "Hell on Wheels" stateside during the Vietnam War. Jim was a very proud veteran, and a lifelong member of the American Legion Post 502. He worked at Gary Wine and Liquor before joining with Indiana Wholesale Wine and Spirits where he worked for 47 years, retiring as warehouse manager in 2012. He was an avid sports fan, cheering for the Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs. He was also a very talented catcher in his younger years playing baseball, receiving an offer to play professionally with Milwaukee. Family was of the most importance to him, cherishing the 53 years he spent with his wife, Jan.
Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, December 8, 2024 at 2:30 pm at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton, IN 46304. A visitation will be from 12:30 pm until the time of service at 2:30 pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Jim's name to: Wounded Warriors Project at woundedwarriorproject.org or D.A.V (Disabled American Veterans) at help.dav.org.
