Newell is survived by his son, Newell B. (Bonita) Phillips IV; daughter, Melanie (Eugene) Yagelski; grandchildren, Eugene (Chelsea) Yagelski III, Branden (Alyssa Wilson) Yagelski, Sydney Yagelski, Brandon (Sasha) Dubich, Cody Dubich, Shane Dubich; great-grandchildren, Eugene Yagelski IV, Paisley Yagelski, Camden Dubich, Ryan Dubich; sister, Leanne P. Halfman; sister-in-law, Connie Phillips; and many extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Marianne (Magura) Phillips; his parents, Newell and Helen Phillips; mother-in-law, Anna Magura; brother, George Phillips; nephew, George Phillips II.
Newell graduated from Lew Wallace High School in Gary. He was a United States Navy Veteran. In 1962, Newell married Marianne Magura. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Newell loved life and was an avid fisherman and hunter.
Funeral Ceremony will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at Resurrection Lutheran Church, 8061 E. Lincoln Highway, Crown Point, IN 46307. Burial will follow at Ridgelawn Cemetery, Gary, IN. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 30, 2026 from 3:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton, IN 46304. Rest in the Lord's Peace Braley. I will always remember the Christian fellowship we shared at Resurrection Lutheran Church and your "Peerless" spaghetti sauce and Texas Toast when you hosted your spaghetti fund raiser dinners at church.
