James Whalan

James ("Jim") G. Whalan, 77, passed away on Sunday, August 10, 2025, at Achieve Rehab and Nursing Facility in Liberty.

Jim, the son of Francis and Joan Whalan, was born on October 18, 1947, in Manhattan. At age thirteen, he and his family moved to Highland Lake, where he attended and graduated from Eldred Central School.

He attended Sullivan County Community College prior to serving in the United States Army.

Shortly after his return home, he began working for the Sullivan County Sheriff's Department, from which he retired as a Deputy Sheriff Lieutenant. Following his retirement, he worked with his brother at Bill Whalan Auto Sales in Mongaup Valley.

Jim had a great love for animals, the beach, and was a dedicated son, devoting his Sundays to spending time with his late mother.

He is survived by his two daughters, Rachel (Will), and Christine (Florencio); son, Frank (Susan); four grandchildren; brother, Bill (Lynn); sister, Judy (Pete); and several nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held at Vanlnwegen-Kenny Funeral Home, at 401 Broadway in Monticello, from 12 to 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 21, 2025. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment of his ashes with military honors will follow at the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery in Liberty.
