James Aaron White Face, "Hakata Zintkala Najin" (Baby Bird That Stands Alone) was born on October 8, 1965 in Porcupine, SD to Hobart White Face and Effie (Big Owl) White Face. James made his journey to the Spirit World on January 3, 2023 at his home in Evergreen near Porcupine, SD.
As a child growing up, James was the youngest of 11 and his mother, Effie, nicknamed him Baby Bird. James attended high school at Little Wound High School in Kyle, SD and then furthered his education by attending Black Hills State University in Spearfish, SD and Oglala Lakota College. James graduated with his Bachelors in Business Education. James had numerous fun and awesome jobs throughout his career. His working career includes Yellow Stone National Park, Wyoming; Wells Fargo, I.H.S. Pine Ridge, Oglala Lakota Housing, Wolf Creek Elementary School, Little Wound High School, Rockyford Elementary School, Big Bats, and Taco Johns in Pine Ridge, and East Wind Casino in Martin, SD.
James was not only educated, but he was very talented; he was a very creative and amazing artist and enjoyed doing artwork creating beautiful art for earrings. His artwork included fancy dancers in regalia and also horse paintings and bear claw prints. James was a very fun, awesome, and handsome brother, son, uncle, grandfather, and friend to many and all. He made many friends and business colleagues throughout his life; Uncle James will be greatly missed.
James is survived by his brothers, Tim White Face and David Sam White Face; sisters, Vina Steele, Mary Young Bear, and Lillian Good Shield; and numerous grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
James was preceded in death by his mother, Effie (Big Owl) White Face; father, Hobart White Face; sisters, Trevian Scout, Amy Kay Plenty Bull, Myrna Young Bear, and Clara Whipple; brother, Howard White Face; brothers-in-law, Gilbert Good Shield and Alphonso Good Shield; nephews, David Scout, Brian White Face, Dennis Steele, Michael White Face, and Eldon Good Shield; nieces, Janet Young Bear, Waynette White Face, Leslie Young Bear, and Donna Scout; granddaughter, Susan Yellow Boy; grandson, Vernon Lovejoy; and special friend, Ray Long.
Pallbearers will be Anthony Brave Heart, Sr., Eldon Steele, Jr., Darwin Steele, Adrian Yellow Boy, Jr., Adam Yellow Boy, Sam White Face, Jr., Wallace Little, and Justin Red Eagle.
