James Whitt Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Johnson-Arrowood Funeral Home on Mar. 4, 2026.
James R. Whitt, 74, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, February 27, 2026, following a brief illness.

James was born in Big Stone Gap, VA on August 5, 1951, to his parents, the late Robert G., Sr. and Evelyn (Lane) Whitt. He enjoyed going fishing, hunting and loved going on side-by-side trips with his brother and friends. James was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and brother, and will be missed more than words can say.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Brandy Whitt; and his brother, Bobby Whitt.

Those left to cherish James's memory are his loving wife of 51 years, Debbie (Stapleton) Whitt; stepdaughter, Becky Nickels; granddaughters, Makenzie Whitt (fiancé, Logan), and Morgan Keesling (fiancé, Devin); great granddaughter, Wrenley Greer; brothers, Billy Whitt (Susie); several nieces and nephews; as well as his hunting and fishing buddies.

A visitation will be held from 1:00 – 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at Johnson-Arrowood Funeral Home in Church Hill. The funeral service will follow in the funeral home with Pastor Nathan Dugger officiating. A graveside service will follow the funeral service in procession to Holston View Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be Logan Youngblood Mike McConnell, Spencer Quesenberry, Clifford Estep, Chris Presley, and Shane Vandergriff.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Camp Bays Mountain.

Hate to hear about James passing. He was a super coal miner. Enjoyed working with him. Never a dull moment. Rest in peace buddy.
