Jamie was born December 7, 1961 to James and Judy Hoff at St. Alexius Hospital in
Bismarck, ND. The third of nine children, Jamie was the firecracker in a lively family right from the start. The Hoffs lived in
Leith, ND before moving permanently to the family ranch on the Cannonball River, south of
Carson, ND. Like most ranch kids, her childhood was shaped by learning responsibility early in life and seeing her parents' stewardship of the land and animals in their care. Witnessing the way neighbors loved and supported one another, she learned the value of community. These experiences would lay the foundation for values she held throughout her life. Jamie participated in 4-H, community events, and sports. Never shy, she would talk to anyone she encountered and had a knack for turning everyday events into celebrations. Their family loved to play games together, and Jamie was famous for saying, "May the best cheater win!"
Jamie graduated from Carson High School in 1980 and afterward attended Dickinson State College. One winter on the prairie, while going out to start her car, her hair froze and she declared, "This is the last winter I'm spending in North Dakota!" True to her word, in 1988, Jamie
moved to Lake Tahoe, California. In 1990, after having her first child, Amanda, Jamie set her sights on electrolysis school in
Phoenix, AZ. She started a successful electrolysis business, The American Electrolysis Center in Reno. After having her second child Collin, she moved to Sparks in 1994. Adding laser hair removal to her skill set, in 1998 she moved her business to High Desert Dermatology with Dr. Krause and Dr. Hayes. Hard-working, highly-skilled, and personable, Jamie's work was valued and respected by her colleagues and clients.
Jamie's greatest pride and joy were her children and grandchildren. As a mother, her bed was always open for cuddles, foot and back rubs, and the occasional loving light back tickle. She worked hard to provide a happy Catholic home. Jamie always found time to help with homework, encouraged her children to pursue their goals, and to say prayers before bedtime. Amanda and Collin fondly remember working on the garden every spring and summer, grilling steaks and fixing a salad to eat on the patio and then later playing cards or board games. It didn't matter whether it was warm or cold out, having a nice evening fire, a glass of wine, and a good movie were always on the agenda.
On October 14, 2009, Jamie married Mike McCrea. Beloved by her husband, Jamie enjoyed many summer weekends going on drives with him to their favorite picnic spot north of Truckee. She also loved doing overnight trips with him on their boat exploring the Sacramento Delta. Blessed with a green thumb, she could grow anything in their beautiful backyard. Hummingbirds were amongst her favorite birds. Jamie and Mike would love to sit at their dinner table watching them fly in and out enjoying her flower garden.
True to her mothering spirit, Jamie would take time to stop and say hello to any child she ever saw. She loved children; she truly believed they were a gift from God. She was a reader – she once read The Da Vinci Code in a single day and re-read her favorite book, Pride and Prejudice,
countless times. Jamie also had a strong passion for painting, sometimes staying up all night with her paintbrushes. Her art is cherished, hanging on the walls of her family's homes.
She was known for her infatuation with babies, her love of freshly cut flowers, being the "cool aunt" (at least she thought so!), shopping for her family, and making a special outing just for a candy bar.
Jamie is survived by her husband of 15 years, Mike McCrea, (Sparks, NV), her daughter and son-in-law Amanda and Andrew Nazarechuk (
Reno, NV), their children Petra and Noah, her son Collin Guitron (
Reno, NV), stepson Matt McCrea (
Sacramento, CA), his daughters Kylee and Kinsley, stepdaughter Erin McCrea (
Sacramento, CA) and her daughter Riley June. She is also survived by her sister, Mary and Jim Jenson (Spearfish, SD), sister Beth Dinneen (
Bismarck, ND), sister Cathy and Joe Miller (Spearfish, SD), brother Jim Hoff (Rapid City, SD), brother Bob and Kathy Hoff (
Carson, ND), brother Dave and Miracle Hoff (Fargo, ND), sister Jeanie Hoff (
Nokomis, FL) and her brother Wayne and Beth Hoff (LaMoure, ND), 27 nieces and nephews, and 30 grandnieces and nephews.
Jamie is preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Judy Hoff, her niece, Shannon Locati, and her brother-in-law, John Dinneen.
