Obituary for Jan Fijor

January 13, 1947 – August 6, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jan Fijor, who departed this life peacefully on August 6, 2025, at the age of 78, leaving behind a legacy of strength, craftsmanship, and unwavering devotion to family and community.

Jan was born on January 13, 1947, in Landstuhl, Germany, to Alexander Fijor and Maria Fijor (née Filip). In 1948, as an infant, he immigrated with his parents to Ponta Grossa, Paraná, Brazil, where the family sought new opportunities. In 1969, Jan began a new chapter by immigrating alone to the United States, making his home in Spring Valley, New York.

Shortly after arriving in the U.S., Jan answered the call to serve his new country and enlisted in the Vietnam War around 1970, a decision reflective of his courage and commitment to the ideals of freedom and duty.

In New York, Jan founded Fijor General Masonry and Construction, which became a cornerstone of development throughout Rockland County. His expertise and integrity earned him a sterling reputation, and he stood as a respected figure in the local construction community.

In 1986, Jan helped his younger brothers, Cesario and Casimiro, along with their wives and children, relocate to the United States. Cesario and Casimiro then joined Jan's business as skilled masons, and together they grew the company into a thriving, family-run enterprise renowned for quality and professionalism.

Jan was a loving husband to Georgette Fijor, until her passing on December 26, 2013. Though they had no children, Jan's generous heart extended to his family and community.

A few years after Georgette's passing, Jan met Mona Haaland, an incredibly kind-hearted and compassionate individual who became his devoted companion. Mona stood by Jan with unwavering support, love, and loyalty, sharing in the joys and challenges of his later years. She remained by his side until the very moment of his passing, a true and constant presence in his life.

Jan is survived by his loving siblings: Irene, Daniela, and Casimiro, and is predeceased by his brother Cesario. His legacy is one of resilience-from war torn Europe to the fertile lands of Brazil, and onward to the promise of America.
