Jan Koot, 89, of Raleigh, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2026, from complications related to COVID-19. A devoted husband, loyal friend, and steadfast member of his community, Jan's life was a remarkable journey marked by service, hard work, and love.
Born on December 28, 1936, in The Hague, Netherlands, Jan immigrated to the United States as a young man, seeking opportunity and new beginnings. He proudly served his adopted country in the United States Army from 1959 to 1962, working in Radio Maintenance with the Artillery Command. Following his military service, Jan began his long and rewarding career at IBM-starting in the mailroom and rising through dedication and curiosity to become a Senior Coder, a role he held until his retirement after three decades of service.
Jan shared 59 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Harriet W. Koot-together for 64 years in total. Their love story was filled with laughter, travel, and companionship. With their trusty RV, they explored the country together, building countless memories along the way. Harriet was, as Jan often said, his greatest accomplishment.
A kind and sometimes stubborn soul, Jan had an unshakable sense of loyalty and humor. He loved his neighbors, cherished his church family at Holland Methodist Church, and was a proud member of the Young at Heart (YAH) group. His passions included soccer, fellowship, and the simple joy of good company.
Though Jan leaves no immediate relatives, his chosen family of neighbors and church friends will continue to honor his memory.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Holland Methodist Church, 9433 Ten-Ten Road, Raleigh, NC, at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 21, 2026, with a small reception to follow.
