Jane Calahan Obituary

Jane Marie Calahan, age 83, of Rincon, Georgia, passed away peacefully at her sister's home in Midlothian, Virginia on Oct 6, 2025 under the care of River City Hospice. Jane had moved to Virginia in January 2024 due to ill health.

Jane was born on July 15, 1942 in Staten Island, New York to Dorothea and Robert Hansen, Sr. After high school she worked on Wall St. in New York City. She was office manager of the furniture department at Korvette's on Staten Island for over 10 years. After her marriage to Herb she had various jobs where they lived. They finally retired to Rincon and the house that Herb built.

She married Herbert Calahan in 1976 and they followed Herb's job to Georgia, Pennsylvania, Florida and back to Staten Island before settling back in Rincon. The house on Blandford Road that Herb built held lots of memories for the many Calahan's that remember it. Jane and Herb loved having family around them and always had time for all of them.

Jane is survived by her sister and brother in law Christine and Michael Debany of Virginia as well as niece Sara Debany Harrell, nephews Robert Hansen, III Christopher Hansen, Adam Debany, sister in law Suzanne Hansen, stepdaughters Theresa Herb, Janet and David Marvel and Tawnua Gordon.

Jane was a devoted volunteer at Manor House in Rincon GA for over 10 years. She enjoyed her time there and made many friends. Her friends will remember her for her laugh as well as her cheese sandwiches and Diet Cokes! Jane was always up for a trip out to lunch or Walmart or better yet Dollar Tree!

Jane was also a member of the Rincon Methodist church for many years. She devoted many hours to visiting the nursing home, driving seniors, working the Wednesday night dinners helping to clean while Donna cooked and singing in the choir.

Jane delighted in being "Grandma Jane" to many Calahan children, grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as nieces and nephews! She enjoyed keeping the Calahan Family Reunion going long after Herb passed away.

Jane was especially grateful to Shelley and Jeremy Payne for their love and assistance for many, many years. She treasured her good friend Sarah Martin and always remembered the many hours they sat watching the turtles on Sarah's lake. Their trips to the bread store for turtle food yielded many boxes of donuts also! She loved and appreciated her good friends Donna and Dick Leach as well as Lynn Stacy.

Jane was preceded in death by her husband Herb Calahan, both parents Dot and Bob Hansen as well as her brother Robert Hansen, Jr., stepsons Russell Calahan, Herbert Darnell Calahan and Herbert Hezzie Calahan.

Graveside service will be held 11 am Friday, December 12, 2025 at Middleground Baptist Church Cemetery in Sylvania.

Earlier today

Janey, my nickname for her, was an absolutely amazing woman. Even with all the trials she endured during her lifetime, she always had words of comfort and solace for everyone, especially children. She and I had mischievously wonderful times together....even surprising some others with our shenanigans. When Janey's memory started to falter, she still carried on. I will miss my good friend, and will raise a glass of her favorite wine in toast.

I am sad to read of Jane. I worked with her at Manor House where she was always a joy to all. God bless her family.
