Jane Hurley Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Heald Funeral Home - Saint Albans on Feb. 17, 2026.
Jane Marie Burns Hurley, 88, of St. Albans Vermont, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, February 5, 2026. Born and raised in Hartford, CT, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Irene (Ahearn) Burns. She was the beloved wife of John Hurley for 63 years. Together they had a marriage that was once in a lifetime, taking on the joys and struggles of life as a team.

Born in 1937, Jane lived in Wethersfield, CT for 40 years, where she raised 2 children, Kathleen (Hurley) Stergas and John Hurley. She enjoyed being a mother and cherished the time she spent with her family. She had 3 grandchildren who she loved deeply, Sean Stergas, Julia Stergas and Evan Hurley.

In 2005, Jane moved with Jack to Ludlow, Vermont and then East Wallingford, Vermont, where she enjoyed golfing, gardening and spending time with friends and family. In 2018, she and Jack moved to St Albans, Vermont to be closer to family.

Over the years, Jane spent countless hours attending her children and grandchildren's activities and sporting events. She was active in her church and became a Eucharistic minister. Jane was a homemaker until her children got older. She worked at the Wethersfield Public Library, the State of Connecticut Department of Public Safety and finally the Hartford Foundation of Giving.

Jane's favorite pastimes included traveling with Jack to California and Maine. She was a quilter and enjoyed knitting and crocheting. She loved the beach and found great pleasure in reading. She became a Master Gardner and spent hours working in her gardens. Most of all, Jane loved laughing and talking with Jack during their daily "wine time".

Along with her husband John of St. Albans, VT, she leaves two children, Kathleen (Hurley) Stergas and husband Rick of Fairfax VT, John Hurley and wife Candice of Carlsbad CA. Her grandchildren Sean and Julia Stergas, of Boston, MA and Evan Hurley of Carlsbad CA. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Shirley Burns of Wethersfield, CT along with many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her siblings and their spouses, Joseph Burns and Fran Christie, Edward and Gloria Burns, William and Ann Burns, Pat and Paige Everin, Rita and Howard Thiery and Raymond Burns.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am, Saturday, February 28, 2026, at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Holy Angels Church, 246 Lake St., St. Albans Vermont.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the VNA & Hospice of the Southwest Region. 7 Albert Cree Drive, Rutland, Vermont 05701. (www.vermontvisiting nurses.org).
