Janet Callen Obituary

Janet Gail Callen, 89

Janet Gail Callen, a beloved matriarch and dedicated professional, passed away peacefully on September 3, 2025, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, at the age of 89. Born and raised in Great Falls, Montana on January 19, 1936, Janet's early life was marked by the values of hard work, education, and a steadfast commitment to her family.

A proud graduate of Great Falls High School, Janet pursued higher education at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington, where she was a member of the Alpha Phi sorority. Her dedication to education only deepened over the years as she raised her three children and supported them through college, demonstrating the importance of knowledge and perseverance. Later in life, she attended the University of Idaho and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, becoming a licensed CPA. In 1993, Janet began her career with the IRS as an auditor in Idaho, a role in which she served with integrity and diligence.

Janet was not only devoted to her career but also to her family. She is lovingly remembered by her sisters, Maxine Kunkel of Florida and Patricia Pratt of Utah, her sons Rick Howarth of Sandpoint, Idaho, and Scott Howarth and his wife Gina of Atherton, California, and her daughter Leslie Covey and her husband Stan of Harrison, Idaho. Janet took great pride in her five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, always loving and supporting her family at every stage of their lives.

A woman of many interests, Janet cherished time spent outdoors, enjoying activities such as walking, hiking, and bike riding. She was an avid bird watcher, traveling the world to explore the beauty of nature with friends. Her passion for the arts, particularly music, often led her to indulge in the symphony, which brought her much joy. Janet's competitive spirit also shone brightly when she achieved the title of Women's Idaho State Champion in the International Metallic Silhouette Association during the 1979/1980 season.

Janet G. Callen leaves behind a legacy of love, support, and inspiration. Her spirit will live on in the hearts of her family and friends, who will forever cherish the moments spent with her and the lessons she imparted throughout her remarkable life.

Contributions on her behalf can be made to the Coeur d'Alene Audubon Society or Companion Animal Shelter (Kootenai Humane Society.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Gentiva Hospice and the Courtyard of Coeur d'Alene for their exceptional care, compassion, and support.
