GARDNER, Janet Lucy, 85, of Harrisonburg, Va., beloved wife, mother, grandmother and aunt, passed away on November 25, 2011. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Dr. Joseph E. Gardner; son, Dr. Steven E. and wife, Kathryn J. of Harrisonburg; and daughter, J. Carol of Mechanicsville; three grandchildren, Jeffrey E. Gardner and wife, Gina of Chiavenna, Italy; Amy G. Monroe and husband, Adam of Jackson, Wyoming and John S. Gardner of Ithaca, New York; sisters, Estelle Abernathy of Dolphin, Va. and Lorena Brandon of Dundas, Va.; and many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert Watson Lucy and Era Lewis Lucy of Dolphin; brothers, Lewis W. Lucy and Albert R. Lucy of Dolphin; sisters, Alice House of Dolphin and Nellie Cleaton of South Hill.

She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and active in the church circle. Mrs. Gardner was a member of the Rockingham Memorial Hospital Medical Auxiliary, real estate agent and avid golfer. She enjoyed traveling the world with her husband and supported many charitable organizations through anonymous donations. Her memory will be cherished by the many family members and friends who visited, cared for and offered their love and support during these last few months. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to all the caregivers, medical staff and friends for all their support. "Blessed are the givers and grateful are the receivers". The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, November 27, 2011, at Kyger Funeral Home, 3173 Spotswood Trail, Harrisonburg, Va. 22801. A memorial service will be held at Asbury United Methodist Church in Harrisonburg on Monday November 28, 2011 at 2 p.m. Interment will be private for the family. Memorial contributions may be made to RMH Cancer Center, 2008 Health Campus Dr., Harrisonburg, Va. 22801 or Asbury United Methodist Church, 205 S. Main St., Harrisonburg, Va. 22801. Although we didn't know your Mom, we know that she was a wonderful mother and person to have raised such a great daughter.
