Janet May Smiley Grine, 81, passed away on Monday, September 8, 2025, at Staunton Post Acute and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born on March 28, 1944, in Staunton to the late William Guy, Sr. and Viola May McLear Smiley.

Janet’s greatest joy was her family – her daughter, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She also had a love for country music and never missed a chance to cheer on her favorite NASCAR driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr.

She had a special love for animals, especially her cats, and enjoyed tending her garden and watching hummingbirds. Janet was also known for her competitive streak when it came to card games.

She worked for many years at Reid’s Grocery in Staunton, where she was truly a jack of all trades, and later served as a driver for People Places in retirement.

She is survived by her daughter, Krystal Dawn Zinkhan Goff and her husband, Harvey Lee, Jr.; her grandchildren, Kari, Matthew, and Alyssa Goff and her fiancé, Jeff; her step grandson, Joshua Goff; and her seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas James Grine; her sisters, Doris Jean Smiley Whitesell, Betty Ann Smiley Gay, and Virginia Faye Smiley Harrah; her half-brother, William Guy Smiley, Jr.; and her half-sister, Martha Eglentine Smiley Caldwell.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, September 11, 2025, at Oak Lawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens in Staunton with Reverend John Staubus officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in Virginia (P.O. Box 4110, Glen Allen, VA 23058) or Shenandoah Valley Animal Services Center (1001 Mt Torrey Road, Lyndhurst, VA 22952).

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to Staunton Post Acute and Rehabilitation Center and Gentiva Hospice – especially Makayla and her special caregiver, Courtney - for all their compassionate care, kindness, and compassion during this time.
