Janet "Jan" Edith (Farrow) King
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jan King on the morning of November 19, 2025. We ask you to honor her and celebrate a life well lived.
She was born on February 2, 1940 in Providence, Rhode Island. She grew up on a small family farm near North Scituate, Rhode Island and her accent never left her. She often recounted fond memories of time spent with family and friends on outdoor activities, especially swimming. She graduated from Hope High School and went on to the University of Rhode Island where she met Daniel King, her husband of 59 years. She enjoyed her membership in Alpha Delta Pi sorority.
Professionally, she worked as a school teacher until children and her husband's military career demanded more flexibility. She later continued in her professional journey as a secretary/bookkeeper and then went into real estate with Clowers & Fletcher. She was a very successful realtor in Calhoun County, Alabama until her retirement. She then focused on battling stage IV colon cancer. She successfully fought and won that battle in the mid1990s and then enjoyed her daughters, grandkids, family, friends, and playing bridge.
She doted on her husband, daughters, grandkids, and family and had many wonderful friendships. She was a wonderful enigma, a sweet, charming, loving lady who loved to recount being "The Terror of Brandy Brook Road." As a teen, she bent the rules on where to swim, much to the consternation of the local authorities. She was a ruthless card shark at the bridge table, where she achieved the rank of Emerald Life Master. She wanted to and remained in her home of 50 years until her new battle with stage IV pancreatic cancer required her to move closer to Vanderbilt, where she received excellent care.
She spent her final months working with Vandy and a wonderful, loving team at NHC Place Cool Springs battling her cancer & other health challenges. While there she constantly greeted people in the public spaces and became a happy member of the "Regulars table" in the dining room where the staff provided great care for everyone's needs. The family sincerely appreciates all the things her care team did to smooth the way.
Jan is survived by her three daughters: Deborah Elizabeth (Bill) Cecil, Linda Ann (Bruce) Brodie, and Carolyn Joan (Will) Holmes; eight grandchildren: Ryan Cecil, Austin (Lauren) Cecil, Jenna (Max) Schmidt, Daniel Brodie, Vivan Brodie, William Holmes, Michael Holmes, and Anna Holmes. She is also survived by four great grandchildren: Cordelia Brodie, Sawyer Cecil, Shephard Cecil, and Baker Schmidt, as well as her nephew William S. Farrow and niece Wendy L. Martinez. She was preceded in passing by her husband Daniel "Dan" King, her older brother Ralph Austin Farrow, Jr. and parents Ralph Austin Farrow, Sr. and Dorothy Elizabeth (Pike) Farrow.
Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, at 10:30 AM at Anniston Memorial Funeral Home with Bert Oelschig officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, on Wednesday, one hour prior to the service.
