Janet Markarian Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Abbey Cremation Service - Rocky Hill on Jan. 27, 2026.
Janet Barre' Markarian, born August 25,1933, passed away on January 14, 2026.

She leaves behind three children, Tabitha, Robin and Mark. She was predeceased by her son Craig. She leaves behind Dru, who although was not her son by blood, was a son to her in every way that mattered. She leaves behind Robin's husband Stephen, and her grandchildren Matthew and Tara, and Tara's husband Jim. She also leaves behind her great grandchildren, Micah, Levi, Mya, Joshua and Myles, and she was soon to be a great great grandmother. She was born one of ten children, and she leaves behind her brother "Skip", and sister Nathalie.

She was a good friend and she was a good neighbor. She was a teacher, mentor, gift giver, letter writer, poet, author, confidant, singer, dancer, a lover of music, painter, and avid reader. She was a lifelong student. She got her GED later in life because she was unable to finish high school when she was a young girl. She was a lover of books, her favorite book being the Bible. She was loyal and faithful to her Heavenly Father Jehovah, and prayer was of the utmost importance to her. She believed very strongly in the Lord's Prayer where it says "Thy will be done on Earth as it is in heaven." She looked forward to a time when God's will would be done on this Earth. She loved God's creation. She loved Violets, and every other flower she ever saw. She loved the Moon, and would call to make sure that we looked up to see it too. She loved birds and trees and clouds and stars and viewed everything as if she was seeing them for the very first time. She was a lover of justice, and a champion of any and every underdog. She loved purple. She loved antiques and rings and bracelets and necklaces and earrings. She loved people. She was sympathetic, empathetic, patient and kind. When she was still driving she would toot her horn when she was leaving or passing by her neighbor's house. She was always thinking about others. She was always grateful for the little things.

For many, many years she was the owner of the World Of Nutrition, a health food store in the center of Newington, CT. She never considered herself a "business woman", but she loved helping people and the store allowed her to do that. That was her passion, sharing what she had learned with others, sharing her own personal experiences, and helping others to help themselves and feel the best that they could. She would tirelessly do research to find answers to people's questions. People would come from all over to the store and that was due in large part because of the help they received from her. To say that she was successful would be a huge understatement. As someone said just the other day, "She was a pillar in the community", and that she was. Another person said "Your mom was a treasure, and she had such a long, wonderful, meaningful life." A meaningful life indeed. Her goodness will live on forever.

Janet was one of my favorite people in town--I regularly visited the store, and she and I would talk about everything under the sun. As a child she had a singing/dancing partner who grew up to be a children's author (perhaps it was Tomie dePaola) Imagine! two such talented people from the same town! Their memories of the hurricane of 1938 were vivid. and made great books, some of which I have shared with my two grandsons who are in grades 3 and 6. Reading her obituary yet once again causes me to stop, and reminisce, once again on what a difference one person can make in the world.

To Janet`s family. I came to know Janet as I am a customer at World of Nutrition. I found her to be friendly, caring about my needs and informative. I became a regular customer because of her sincere interest to help me. She was very kind. Rest in peace. Sue Rich.
