Janet "Jan" Severson, age 77, of Ankeny, IA, formerly of Hubbard, passed away on Saturday, November 15, 2025 at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, IA.
Janet Marie (Olson) Severson was born July 5, 1948 in Hampton, Iowa to Clarence and Audrey (Lindstrom) Olson. She was the third of four children. She and her two older brothers, Phil and Paul, and younger sister, Janel, grew up in the Goodell area and then moved to Clarion in their teenage years. Jan graduated from Clarion High School in 1966 and then attended the Americana Academy of Beauty in Des Moines graduating with her Cosmetology Degree in 1967.
She met Roger Severson while working in Kanawha in March of 1968. Roger and Jan were united in marriage on June 20, 1970 at First Lutheran Church in Clarion. They began their married life in Ames while Roger attended Iowa State University. After Roger graduated Jan said she would like to travel so Roger took her to Monmouth, Illinois where their oldest daughter, Tami Lynn, was born in January of 1973. Shortly after Tami's birth they moved to Belle Plaine where their youngest daughter, Sarah Ann, was born in November 1975. They spent several years in Belle Plaine with a short move to Clutier and then back to Belle Plaine before moving to Hubbard. After Roger's retirement they moved to Fair Play, Missouri and then moved to Ankeny within the past several years.
Jan worked as a cosmetologist for several years until a Lupus diagnosis. She then found herself staying home raising Tami and Sarah. As the girls got older, she began to clean homes in Ames part-time and cherished the friendships she built with her clients. Jan made lifelong friends in all the communities she lived in over the years. She enjoyed being active in women's church groups, bible studies, garden club, quilters club and various other organizations. She had several hobbies she enjoyed, sewing (she made many of Tami and Sarah's clothes when they were younger), cross stitch, quilting, flower gardening and bird watching.
Roger and Jan enjoyed traveling, attending Iowa State men's and women's basketball, socializing with friends and spending time with their girls and families. In the past several years as Jan battled Alzheimer's and other health issues Roger remained attentive and devoted to caring for her.
Jan's faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as her Savior was steadfast through her life and carried her through her many health issues. She and Roger belonged to several different churches with their many moves. The church was always the core of where many of their lifelong friendships began and the foundation of their family.
One of the greatest joys of Jan's life was her four grandchildren. She had a close relationship with all of them, and they were fortunate to live close by for most of their childhood and spend lots of time with her. School shopping trips with the girls, watching many sporting events of the boys (and girls too), vacations and outings with all of them and just pure joy and laughter whenever time was spent together.
She was preceded in death by her parents Clarence and Audrey Olson, brothers Phil and Paul Olson, her parents-in-law Harvey and Alice Severson, brothers-in-law Gordon, Gene, Milt and Richard Severson, sisters-in-law Jan Severson, Isabelle Severson and Kay Severson, and nephews Jerry Severson, Bob Severson and Craig Severson.
Jan is survived by her husband, Roger, of 56 years; daughters Tami (Dana) Spindler and Sarah (Scott) Spindler, all of Radcliffe; grandchildren, Kaitlyn (Cody) Hendrickson, Brittany Spindler, Tycin Barkema and Josh Spindler; great-grandsons Hank and Oliver Hendrickson; sister Janel (Russ) Stark; sisters-in-law Marlene (Paul) Smith, Gloria Severson and Deloris Severson and many nieces and nephews.
