I took a night art class for the public at Connecticut College in the late 1970's with Ms. Shafner. She was a wonderful instructor, encouraging and joyful. She always found something to appreciate about each student, no matter how "marginally" gifted we might have been. I've thought of her many times over the decades. I happened to search her name today and was so sad to learn she had died. My note here may seem meaningless, but I wanted to share that, besides her family and friends, she made an impact on the lives of others, so she lives on in all of us.

Shalom,
Please accept our deepest sympathy. Though we only met you and Janet a few times we felt much closer because of Ellen and David, and Ben and Marilyn. She was a great Lady, a real Mench.
Sincerely, Abe and Doris Epstein

When I was first married I took art classes from Janet at Ct. College. She was such a wonderful spirit and inspiration. In the following years whenever I saw her I felt the great warmth of her presence which I will surely miss. My condolences to her family and friends. Lana Orphanides

To Sholom and the entire Shafner Family. Our heartfelt sympathy to all of you on your great loss. Janet was an exceptional person and loved by all who knew her in her many roles, professionally, socially, and as a leader in the New London Jewish community. May the entire family be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem. May you have only simchas in the future.

Dear Sholom,
Our friendship has spanned more than fifty years. It seems like yesterday that we all started our first chavera with Rabbi Feder and what wonderful times they were. Janet's family was always her first priority. She was a wonderful wife, mother and friend. We will all miss Janet in so many different ways. Please know that our hearts are with the entire Shafner family at this very sad time .
