Janet E Slater passed away at home in Brecknock Township, Berks County, on December 31, 2025 at the age of 76 years.
She was born on April 5, 1949in York, Pennsylvania the daughter of Lawrence and Ruth (Lauer) Serff.
Jan graduated in June of 1967 from York's William Penn Senior High School and then earned Bachelor of Science Degree from The Pennsylvania State University in June of 1971.
Janet's career included working in Environmental Education for the PA Bureau of State Parks and later working at several garden centers and volunteering for the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary's semiannual Native Plant Sale. Jan also volunteered at Rock Hollow Woods Environmental Learning Center and served on its board of Directors.
Jan was a gardener and especially interested in native plants and their relationship to birds and other wildlife. Jan was a longtime member of the Baird Ornithological Club and Mengel Natural History Society both of Berks County, PA.
Another passion of Jan's was reading and to support reading and education, she was a weekly volunteer at the Adamstown Public Library.
Jan is survived by her husband of 40 years, Robert Michael (Mike) Slater, her sister Diane (Serff) Jablonski, brother David Serff, her nephew Gregg Jablonski and niece Susanne (Jablonski) Walker.
A private memorial and interment will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers the family requests that friends consider a donation to Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, Kempton, PA or Rock Hollow Woods Environmental Learning Center, Birdsboro, PA.
