Janet Fay Soboroff

Janet Fay Soboroff, 77, of Iowa City, Iowa passed away at her home on March 3, 2026, from a long and courageous battle with ALS, with her husband by her side.

Janet was born on May 15, 1948, in Forest City, IA, the daughter of Frank and Mabel (Spieker) Johnson. On October 6, 1973, she married Stephen Soboroff in Britt, Iowa.

Janet was a former president of the Old Capitol Kiwanis and served as a social worker for 30 years and a school guidance counselor for another ten. Janet was particularly proud of her work with at-risk children and adoptions. She ran the business office of their family business, KCJJ Radio for a decade before retiring.

She enjoyed reading, gardening and taking care of a lifetime of pets.

The Soboroff family wants to thank Compassus Hospice, the ALS Foundation, the staff of KCJJ, and the community for their well-wishes, prayers, and support during her two-year fight. They also send thanks to First United Methodist Church on East Jefferson Street and to Janet's neighbor, Anita Skriver, for her care and love.

Janet is survived by her husband Steve; her son Shane and his family, including his wife Holly and two children, Charlie and Juno; sister Janice Haan; nieces Patty (Jason) Smith and Pam Haan (Jillian Daley); nephew Chris Haan and great-niece and nephew Kei and Daniel Haan. She is also survived by numerous extended family, friends and colleagues.

She was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Mabel Johnson and brother-in-law Thomas Haan.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the ALS Association.
