Janet Kay Howard Woods, a native and lifelong resident of Athens, passed away on Tuesday, September 9, 2025. She was a member of Union Hill Baptist Church.
Janet is preceded in death by her parents: Jack and Mary Lou Womac Howard, her loving husband: Jimmy Woods, brothers: Michael Howard and Steve Howard, and her sisters: Brenda Howard Helms and Barbara Ellen Howard.
She is survived by a daughter: Raven White (Russell) and two sons: Jackson Kyle (Piper) and Elisha Woods (Nicole), her grandchildren: Eden White, Skylar Woods, Zoey Woods, Kaitie Sue Woods, her siblings: Tim Howard (Pam), Gloria Underwood (Terry), Cathy Walden (Faron), Mark Howard (Cherrie), Debbie Cate (Darrell), Angelia Hawkins, and Carole Ware, her best friend: Patty Pearman, along with several nieces and nephews
To many, she was their hair stylist, sister, friend and aunt. But to her kids, she was momma and to her grandkids, she was granny. Even her married-in kids called her momma. Janet Woods was the best. Plain and simple. She was a business owner, a girl boss, an incredible friend, an amazing momma and granny, but her biggest title was Child of God, and she showed that everyday. The light that came from Janet touched many people. Her voice touched so many hearts as it filled a room, and her legacy will live on through her daughter, Raven.
Janet owned Magic Scissors for over 30 years before retirement in 2024. Not only did she provide beautiful and countless hair cuts, she surrounded her clients with singing, prayer and love. She mentored several now business owners and Janet never met a stranger and knew all of her clients as friends.
To her family, she was momma and granny. She was the rock and anchor of the family. Janet loved spending time and cooking over fires with her kids, Raven, Jackson, Russell, Piper, Elisha and Nicole, and she loved spoiling, giving golf cart rides and being with her grandchildren Eden, Skylar, Zoey and Kaitie. Janet's family was the center of her world. Her house was filled with laughter. Some of the best memories of her house is Raven, Bill Pearman and Cathy Hughes singing while Janet played the piano, and her best friend, Patty Pearman would be sitting on the couch smiling.
Janet loved her brothers and sisters unconditionally and loved being around them. There was never a time Janet wasn't talking to one of her siblings and laughing or sharing memories.
Janet loved to travel with her kids and finding the perfect crab legs to eat and challenging who could eat the most crab legs with her sons, Jackson and Russell. She loved shopping with her daughters, Raven and Piper. Ultimately, she loved buying stuff for her grandkids.
Janet loved Jesus and showed His love everyday. There was never a day Janet wasn't talking about Jesus and how good He was to her. She gave God all the glory everyday, even during the hard days. She prayed for her family, friends and anyone that asked. She was the biggest prayer warrior.
Her children and family are going to miss her more than words. Janet fought hard for three years with her children by her side. Her legacy will live on in her children and grandchildren. In the words of Janet, "do right, so I can see you Heaven."
We love you, momma. We will see you again.
Raven, Jackson, Russell, Piper, Elisha and Nicole.
