Janice Howser, 69, of West Scranton, died Friday at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. Her husband of 17 years, Terry Howser, preceded her in death in December of 2007.

Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Leonard and Mary Catalano Grippi. Educated in Scranton schools, Janice worked as a waitress, most notably at Old Country Buffet in Dickson City.

Janice loved her family, and always took the time to listen or help her loved ones whenever she could. She had a special bond with her sister Kathy, her granddaughter, Dakota, as well as her niece, Heather Gall. She had a special sense of fun and also loved to travel whenever she could, and took many memorable trips with her family to New Mexico, the Bahamas and Atlantic City. Janice will be deeply missed, but fondly remembered, by those who knew her.

Surviving are two daughters, Amy Edwards and Lisa August; nine grandchildren, Christopher and Ashley Harmer, Dakota Kujawski, Emmie Werner, Peyton Edwards, Stevie August, Merced August, Thomas August Jr. and Ashyia August; four sisters, Kathy Hart, Maryann Prevish, Nancy Buckery and Roseann Townend; a brother, Mike Grippi; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Russell Abbott, who died in October of 2023; a sister, Theresa Kologeski; and two brothers, Leonard and John Grippi.

In accordance with her wishes she has been cremated. The funeral will be Thursday with a graveside memorial service at 3 p.m. at Italian American Cemetery, Scranton.
