Janice Lewis Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by E. R. Johnson Family Mortuary on Mar. 31, 2026.
Janice Faye Lewis was called home to be with her Lord and Savior on March 23, 2026, in Galveston, TX. Janice was born in Galveston, TX on August 15, 1957. She entered this world as the last of five children born to C. D. Lewis and Lula Mae Lewis.

Janice accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Live Oak Baptist Church and later united with Macedonia Baptist Church under the direction of Pastor A. W. Colbert. She was an active member of the congregation and was serving at the church the Sunday prior to her untimely passing.

Janice was educated in the Galveston School District. She graduated with the Ball High School class of 1975. After high school, Janice attended Lamar University in Beaumont, TX. It was there she joined the sisterhood of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She completed her studies at the University of Houston Clear Lake, receiving a Bachelor's Degree in Education.

Janice worked in several capacities, and all that she undertook was done with excellence. At UTMB she was secretary to Dr. Sally Robinson and Dr. Blackwell. At city hall she worked for several departments. Janice entered the Galveston Independent School District as a secretary to administrators, Barbara McClleveen and Terri Watkins. As an educator in GISD, she inspired students to set and reach high goals at Central Middle School. She motivated students through the AVID courses there.

Janice was a collegiate staffer, pleasant and helpful. Her proudest moment was being chosen as Teacher of the Year 2025, representing AIMS School. She spearheaded activities that would uplift the lives of the children enrolled in AIMS. Janice Lewis loved people and they loved her. Her life was truly one well lived, and full of joy. She loved to laugh and had a beautiful smile which lit up the room. She was an exceptional woman, with a heart of gold. She will be dearly missed.

Left to cherish memories of her life, love, and laughter, are sister, Ella Lewis; brother, Charles Lewis, Sr.; niece, Michelle Freeman; nephews, Levoir Lewis, Frederick Freeman, Tony Freeman; great-nieces, Kierra Brown, Nikkisha Sylvester, Germika Sylvester; great-nephews, Sedrick Brown, Jr., Douglas Freeman, Jr., Davon Freeman and Deven Freeman.
