Janice Rooks Tolar, 95, peacefully passed away in the morning hours of Friday, September 5, 2025 at Crystal Coast Hospice House in Newport. Born in Sampson County on May 17, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Archie William Rooks and Orpha Howard Rooks.

In addition to her parents, Janice was preceded in death by her husband, John Robert Tolar, IV in 2007; her daughter, Jacqueline Cavenaugh who passed last year on April 17, 2024; and her brother, Howard Rooks in 2022.

Janice is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John R. Tolar V and wife, Beth, of Newport; son-in-law, Mike Cavenaugh of Newport; her grandchildren, Tona Draughon and husband, Stephen, of Newport, Brooke T. Fitch and husband, Craig of New Bern, Jennifer Tolar of Goldsboro, Rebeckah Turner of Goldsboro, T.J. Capps of Goldsboro and Kristin J. Duszik and husband, Michael of Jacksonville; her great-grandchildren, Hunter Draughon, Sophie Draughon, Kayleigh Letchworth, Jack Fitch, Jasmin Turner, Madison Duszik, Bentley Duszik, and Caden Moore; and longtime friend, Kim Champion.

Janice was a remarkable woman whose greatest joy came from raising her children and playing a loving, guiding role in the lives of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her home was always a place of comfort, laughter, and the irresistible aroma of something delicious baking in the oven. An extraordinary cook and baker, Janice was known for her mouthwatering country meals and sweet treats that brought everyone to the table and created lasting memories.

She had a passion for gardening and found great pride in her roses, tending to them with the same care and attention she gave to her loved ones. Her green thumb was matched only by her love of country music, which filled her home and heart with melody and joy.

In her younger years, Janice enjoyed playing card games, Scrabble, and dominos-activities that brought out her playful spirit and sharp wit. She also had a love for shopping and never passed up the thrill of a good sale, delighting in finding the perfect item at just the right price.

Janice's legacy is one of unconditional love, strength, and simple pleasures. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her and remembered always for the beauty she brought into the world-through her family, her garden, her kitchen, and her generous heart.

A graveside service to celebrate Janice's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 8, 2025 at Devotional Gardens in Warsaw. The family will receive friends following the service at the cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Crystal Coast Hospice House, 100 Big Rock Weigh, Newport, NC 28570.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Seymour Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
