Janice Winters ObituaryJanice Mary (Whistler) Winters was born on January 30, 1939, to Irvin and Leone (Yohn) Whistler. Jan passed away on January 17, 2025, due to complications from COPD and pneumonia.
Jan was born in Morrison, Illinois and grew up there, moving to Denver, Colorado in high school. She attended Western State College where she met Rusty, and they eloped in 1959. She got her bachelor's degree in K-12 Physical Education in 1961 and began teaching elementary school in 1964. Jan retired from teaching, mostly fifth grade, in 1997. She was an avid game player, puzzle solver and knitter, making and donating over 350 prayer shawls and starting prayer shawl ministries in two churches. She was a lover of outdoor sports, nature and travel.
Jan's empathetic approach to teaching impacted the paths of countless disadvantaged children, forging connections to her students that lasted the rest of their lives. More than a few kids viewed her as playing a pivotal role in their growth, which in a community that served mostly at-risk children, and was about 60 percent military, speaks volumes about her meaningful impact in the region. Jan had a broad base of friends across many generations and interests. She always had a smile and a kind word for everyone.
She is survived by her husband, Marvin "Rusty" Winters of Colorado Springs and her children, Donald Winters of Houston, Texas, Dean Winters, and DeLyn Winters of Colorado Springs. Jan is preceded in death by her parents and brother, Douglas Whistler.
A graveside service for the family will be held on July 25, 2025. In lieu of flowers, please direct donations to The Salvation Army.
