Jann Janitz Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Shikany's Bonita Funeral Home on Jan. 28, 2023.
Jann Floyd Janitz, 84, lived in Bonita Springs and was a former resident of Indianapolis, Indiana. Jann was born on October 22, 1938, at Indianapolis. He is the son of the late Floyd and Ellen (Steckelbeck) Janitz. Jann had been a resident of Bonita Springs since 1980 and he died on January 19, 2023, in Naples, Florida. After graduating high school, Jann attended an engineering school to learn about drawing, constructing and building, and then he worked with others. He used to tell about how he drew fixes for the Indianapolis Federal Buildings.
As a kid, Jann took his rifle out into the forest and fields and became excellent at using guns, rifles, and of course, how to be safe. He always enjoyed walking alone and watching birds, outside in the woods. After High School, he joined Army training and always did well. He showed others how to drive a jeep, he had one at home. Jann also taught people how to use a typewriter. Jann worked with the Indiana National Guard Reserve where he would join a weekend month and two weeks a year for training and keeping his skills sharp. Jann also belonged to the National Rifle Association (NRA).
Jann was a wonderful person to help others learn so much – using guns, how to build sheds, applying fiberglass to patch bathtubs or boats, and having fun times spent on a boat. Jann taught his son, Devon, how to use earthmovers. He even taught his wife, Peggy. He showed how to use a backhoe and lay pipes and wires in areas of new houses, and how to use an excavator to move trees, dirt, and rocks. He also had a couple of dump trucks used for carrying what was needed.
Jann also loved traveling. Trips were all over the United States, with State and National Parks - Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Arches, White Sands, Niagara Falls, Everglades, and more. Trips also happened to Europe, discovering so much about what is seen in books and TV's. Then, he saw real castles, mountains, rocks, the Alps, the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, Stonehenge, Amsterdam, Germany's Romantic Road, and so much more. Jann also did all the driving, even when it was on the wrong side of the road.
As he grew older, Jann decided to work at Sunshine Ace Hardware in Bonita Springs. He worked for over ten years and loved his electrical space. He helped others how to find and use their electrical items. Jann finally decided to retire because his wife, Peggy, was also retiring. We had time together and visited friends in Colorado and our grandchild Misty, in California. Jann walked Misty when she was married and a couple of years later, we visited the great-grandson, and now, they also have a great-granddaughter.
Jann had always loved animals – mostly birds and dogs. He loved his geese and the chickens. When living in Bonita Springs, we had a Sheltie called Maris. She died some years later, but Jann wanted to get another Sheltie, two Shelties. They could be friends to play with. These two are Timbur and Nugget. They loved Jann and Jann loved them. They miss him.
Jann is survived by his beloved wife, Peggy Noel Janitz of Bonita Springs, FL; his son, Devon (Rita) Janitz of Naples Park, FL; his stepdaughter, Amy (David) Williams of Bonita Springs, FL; 2 grandchildren, Misty (Johnston) Niemela of Ramona, CA, and Nicholas Surratt of Palm Harbor, FL, and two young great-grandchildren, Emmett and Hailey of Ramona, CA. Also survived are Jann's brother Terry (Dottie) Janitz of Bonita Springs and Jann's sister, Melody Miller of Bonita Springs.
