Jay Byers Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Fisher Funeral Chapel & Cremation Services - Logansport on Mar. 30, 2026.
Jay L. Byers, 87 of Logansport, Indiana passed away unexpectedly Saturday, March 18, 2026, in Franciscan East, Lafayette.

Born August 28, 19938, in Logansport, he was the son of the late George T. and Helen N. (Sloop) Byers.

On May 27, 1978, in the Main Street Church in Logansport, he was married to Marie-Martine Frankline (Lapreé) Byers, who survives.

A 1956 graduate of Washington Township High School, Jay studied banking and finance at Indiana University-Kokomo. He worked as a head teller and an assistant treasurer for First Federal Savings Bank and then F & M State Bank for over 20 years. He began working in the family business, Byers Disposal, and continued on when it was bought by Waste Management. His favorite job, by far, was being a "Schwan's Man" back when it was owned by the Schwan family. He enjoyed meeting people and delivering good quality food throughout the area.

He had attended Main Street Community Church and had a strong faith in God. He loved bird watching and knew every bird by sight and sound. He loved simple walks and faraway adventures. He also enjoyed keeping up with current events and watching Fox News. Family meant everything to him. Jay enjoyed good food, too, and he knew his way around the kitchen - he could make an excellent omelet.

Surviving with his wife, Martine Byers, is their son, Jason Byers; four sons, Jeffrey, Randy, Devin and Timothy Byers; two stepchildren, Monty (Michele) Ream, and Monique (Todd) Miller; two brothers, twins Dean Byers, and Dale (Jeannie) Byers; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, and his beloved cat, Nermal.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his twin sister, Joy Byers; sister-in-law, Clarisse Byers; and grandson, Timothy Byers.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. Saturday, April 4, in Fisher Funeral Chapel. A funeral service celebrating Jay's life will follow at 11 a.m. with Dawn Fisher officiating. Private burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.
