Dr. Jay Vickers Dewell Jr., 63, passed away on October 12, 2025, in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Born on November 23, 1961, in Cobleskill, New York, Jay lived a life marked by compassion, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to others.
A proud graduate of Cobleskill High School, he pursued his higher education at Union College and continued his academic journey at Albany Medical School where upon graduation, he pursued a career in medicine that would span more than two decades of service to the North Country. As a compassionate surgeon, he devoted 25 years to caring for his community with skill and empathy. His patients and colleagues alike recognized his deep commitment not
only to healing, but also to mentoring the next generation of medical professionals. Teaching
future medical students brought him great joy and was a testament to his belief in the power of knowledge and service.
Jay's infectious personality made him beloved by all who knew him. Whether in the operating room or among friends and family, he had a natural ability to make people feel seen and valued. He was known for his generosity of spirit and his genuine desire to please others- a quality
that left a lasting impression on everyone he encountered.
Outside of his professional life, Jay found happiness in many pursuits. He was an avid skier and golfer who relished time outdoors. He took pride in his flower beds. A skilled cook with a love for travel, he embraced new experiences with enthusiasm. He also enjoyed spirited political debates-always engaging with curiosity and conviction.
Above all else, Jay cherished time spent with his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Connie Dewell; his children, MacKenzie Philbert (Brian), Ryan Dewell (Lauren), Corey Walton (Amanda); his grandchildren, Carson Philbert, Kennedy Philbert, Amelia Philbert; his siblings, Susan Gallagher, Dennis Gallagher (Martha), and Sarah Dewell (Ken Moore); his aunt, Elizabeth Dewell (Connie); his uncle, Robert Dewell (Anne); his stepmother, Tordis Hollenbach Dewell; his stepsisters, Heidi Wall (Scott) and Carolyn Winter (Scott); as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, and cousins.
Jay was predeceased by his mother, Joan Mina Rich; father, Dr. Jay Vickers Dewell Sr.; and brother, John David Gallagher.
Those who knew Jay will remember him as a great husband, father, grandfather, boss, teacher, surgeon-and above all-a true friend. His legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched with kindness and care.
May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and continue to inspire compassion in others.
Calling hours will be held at the First Congregational Church, Malone on Saturday, November 8 from 10 a.m. to noon. A funeral service will immediately follow at noon.
